That’s ‘goals’ plural for Clint Dempsey, who scored twice in Fulham’s 5-0 romp over Wolverhampton. Dempsey wasn’t Fulham’s top scorer on the afternoon, with Pavel Pogrebnyak putting the home side up two goals before Dempsey got on the board in the 56th. Pogrebnyak finished off his hat-trick five minutes later. Dempsey added a second in the 83rd.
“It’s good that those up top are banging them in,” Fulham defender Aaron Hughes said. “Pavel and Clint took their goals superbly and it was great to see. We know that we’re very capable of doing that and it clicked today. We caused Wolves a lot of problems and could well have scored even more."
In Holland, Jozy Altidore scored jest before halftime to make it 2-0 AZ in what would become a 3-1 win over Heracles. Elsewhere in Europe, Michael Bradley went the distance in Chievo’s 1-1 draw with Juventus. Sacha Kljestan played the full 90 in Anderlecht’s 4-0 shutout of Cercle Brugges.
Mexico, and Herculez Gomez got a goal as Santos Laguna had no trouble with San Luis. Oribe Peralta was the hero for Santos, scoring four times with goals in the 4th, 17th, 71st, and 79th minutes. It was Gomez who scored the winner. Gomez’s goal came in the 54th minute with the two teams tied 2-2. San Luis played a man down from the 22nd minute when Alfredo Moreno was sent off.
Tim Howard was in goal for Everton, drawing 1-1- with Queens Park Rangers. Everton’s Royston Drenthe scored 31 minutes into the game, with Bobby Zamora equalizing for QPR five minutes later. Zak Whitbread’s Norwich City lost 1-0 to Stoke. Tim Ream made his second Premier League start for Bolton, a 2-0 loss to Manchester City. Brad Friedel was in goal for Spurs, losing 3-1 to Manchester United on Sunday. Jermain Defoe scored in the 87th minute for Tottenham.
A league down, Jonathan Spector was in Birmingham City’s lineup for a 2-2 draw with Derby County at St Andrews. City led 2-0 with goals from Erik Huseklepp (19th) and Marlon King (57th). A league below that, Frank Simek went the distance for Carlisle, losing 2-0 to Notts County.
Scottish Premier League, and Carlos Bocanegra was the lone American in the lineup for Rangers, losing 2-1 to Hearts. Rangers’ goal came at the end of the first-half through Steven Davis. Hearts scored in the 58th and missed from the penalty spot in the 78th only to put in the rebound. Bocanegra had a save off the goal line. Maurice Edu was suspended for the game.
Bundesliga, and Steve Cherundolo took his regular place in Hannover 96’s starting eleven drawing 202 with Augsburg. Hannover came back with a 33rd minute equalizer after giving up a 12th minute opener. They were in the lead from the 69th minute, but Augsburg converted a penalty a minute from time to split the points. Hannover are 7th in the table, missing out on a chance to go 6th. Jermaine Jones returned to action for Schalke 04, getting the start in a 2-1 loss to Freiburg. Fabian Johnson got the start in Hoffenheim’s 1-1 draw with Cologne. Hoffenheim led from the 33rd minute when Marvin Compper scored. Cologne equalized in the 81st. Timmy Chandler subbed out in the 69th minute during Nurnberg’s 1-0 win against Borussia Moenchengladbach.
Clarence Goodson returned to action with the opening of the Danish season, getting the start for Brondby against Sonderjyske in a 1-0 win. Michael Parkhurst went the distance for Nordsjaelland, drawing 1-1 with AaB. Chris Rolfe started and went 85 minutes for Aalborg.
Primera Division, and Edgar Castillo’s Tijuana are 4th in the table, beating U.A.G. 2-0. DaMarcus Beasley subbed on in the 69th minute for Puebla, who went down a man in the 54th in a 2-1 loss to Chivas.
