It was a tough home game for US soccer player Oguchi Onyewu’s Malaga. The Primera Division club entered their second-leg quarterfinal series against Lionel Messi’s mighty Barcelona in the Copa del Rey tied 2-2. That quickly became 3-2 Barcelona in the 8th minute when Pedro scored. Malaga got an equalizer from Joaquin in the 12th, with that score holding through halftime. Four minutes into the second-half, Pique put Barca back in front, with Roque Sana Cruz equalizing for Malaga. Barcelona struck again with Iniesta scoring in the 76th and Messi putting the game and the series away with an 80th minute goal. Onyewu was on the bench for both legs.
Barcelona advance 4-2 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate to setup a Clasico semifinal against Real Madrid in Spain’s domestic cup. In the other half of the bracket, La Liga’s surprise club Atletico Madrid play Sevilla. In La Liga terms, that’s a 1st vs 3rd and 3nd vs 12th matchup, with Real Madrid desperate to salvage something from the 2012-13 season. That won’t be a Primera Division title, but it could still be the Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League trophies. For Malaga, they’re currently 5th in the table with four teams behind them within three points.
