Oguchi Onyewu got the start in Malaga’s second-leg win over Eibar in the Copa del Rey to take the series 5-2 on aggregate. Eibar opened the scoring in the 11th minute, but Malaga eventually responded with a barrage of late goals. Diego Buonanotte equalized on the night in the 74th minute with Sebastian Fernandez scoring in the 77th. Portillo made it 3-1 on the night in the 81st and Buonanotte scored again in stoppage time. The referee sent off Eibar’s Guille Roldan in the 86th minute.
“Nobody said it was going to be easy,” Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini told his club’s official site. “We were up against a team that knocked out Athletic de Bilbao in an away match. We were aware that Eibar would be full of confidence, and we’d need to pull out all the stops to win.”
In England’s League Cup, Aston Villa used a transitional lineup without Americans Brad Guzan and Eric Lichaj in the starting lineup and lost the first-leg of their semifinal series 3-1 to Bradford City. Bradford led by two goals when Andreas Weimann scored for Villa in the 82nd minute.
Also in England, Stuart Holden featured for Bolton Wanderers reserves, beating Oldham Athletic’s reserves 3-0.
