US National Team player Clint Dempsey returned for Tottenham in their 3-1 win over Reading in England’s Premier League. Reading took a 4th minute lead but Spurs were level six minutes later when Michael Dawson scored. Emmanuel Adebayor made it 2-1 Tottenham in the 51st with Dempsey finishing off the scoring in the 79th minute.
“Credit to Reading, they managed to get in behind us and had the chance to get back to 2-2,” Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas said. “At times, we haven’t had that luck in the running of a game, but they didn’t score and then we managed to score to put the game to bed. It’s an important win.”
Also in the Premier League, Geoff Cameron’s Stoke City were shutout 3-0 at Manchester City. Brad Guzan’s Aston villa drew 2-2 with Swansea at the Liberty Stadium. The home side took the lead in the 9th minute with Andreas Weimann equalizing for Villa in the 44th. Villa went ahead from the penalty spot in the 84th minute, but Swansea split the points with a 95th minute equalizer.
In the Championship, Jonathan Spector’s Birmingham City were shutout 1-0 by leaders Cardiff City at St Andrew’s Stadium. Tim Ream and Bolton were shutout 1-0 by Leeds United at Elland Road. Bolton are now 16th in the table. In League One, Frank Simek’s Carlisle were shutout 1-0 by Crewe Alexandria. The referee booked Simek in the 59th minute.
