Danny Williams and Reading lost 4-0 at Manchester United. "I hate losing and I hated losing today," Reading manager Jaap Stam said. "But it's what the players do with it. Whether they learn what to do to improve themselves as players or not. It's a great experience for these players. And it's up to them to make it harder for a team like this when they play against them again."
Eric Lichaj and Nottingham Forest lost 2-0 at Wigan Athletic. Forest fell behind in first-half stoppage time, trailing 2-0 from the 57th minute. Lichaj failed to convert a penalty in the 81st. Jonathan Spector's Birmingham City drew -1 with DeAndre Yedlin's Newcastle United at St Andrew's. Daryl Murphy put Newcastle up in the 5th minute with Lukas Jutkiewicz equalizing in the 42nd. Spector subbed out in the 44th.
Tim Ream and Fulham beat Cardiff City 2-1 away. Trailing from the 8th minute, Stefan Johansen equalized in the 14th. Ryan Sessegnon scored Fulham's winner in the 33rd. Brad Guzan was in goal for Middlesbrough in their 3-0 shutout of Sheffield Wednesday. Grant Leadbitter put Boro up in the 58th. Middlesbrough went a man down a minute later. Alvaro Negredo doubled the lead in the 67th with Marten de Roon scoring in stoppage time.
Cameron Carter-Vickers and Spurs shutout Aston Villa 2-0. Benjamin Davis opened the scoring at White Hart Lane in the 71st minute. Heung-Min Son doubled the lead in the 80th.
In Liga MX, Jonathan Bornstein and Queretaro lost 1-0 at Veracruz. Jose Torres subbed out in the 62nd minute for Tigres in their scoreless draw with Santos Laguna. Michael Orozco and Paul Arriola started and Joe Corona subbed on in the 58th minute for Tijuana's 2-0 loss at Morelia. Arriola subbed out at halftime.
Omar Gonzalez and Pachuca got the better of William Yarbrough's Leon in their 4-2 win at Estadio Leon. Fernando Navarro put Leon up in the 10th minute with Hirving Lozano equalizing in the 18th. Leon retook the lead in the 23rd. Pachuca equalized from the penalty spot in the 27th. Lozano scored again in the 77th, finishing off his hat-trick in the 87th.
Edgar Castillo subbed out in the 59th minute for Monterrey's 3-1 win at Puebla. A goal from Jesus Molina in the 23rd minute cancelled out Puebla's opener two minutes earlier. Puebla was back in the lead in the 37th with Molina equalizing again in the 56th. Edwin Cardona converted a penalty for the game winner in the 86th minute.
