Americans Abroad: Chandler Scores

The big news of the weekend from Europe was Timmy Chandler scoring the only goal in Nurnberg’s 1-0 win over Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga.  Chandler’s goal came in the 13th, minute at the Easy-Credit Stadion, with Raphael Schafer needing one save for the shutout. Nurnberg are 14th in the table, two points above the relegation zone. 

Also in the Bundesliga, Steve Cherundolo was back in the eleven for Hannover 96, going the distance in a 1-1 draw with Hamburg. Same score for Danny Williams and Fabian Johnson’s Hoffenheim, finishing 1-1 against Freiburg. Johnson picked up the assist on Roberto Firmino’s opening goal in the 24th minute, but Freiburg equalized in stoppage time.   Jermaine Jones and Schalke were shutout 2-0 by Borussia Dortmund. A league down, Luis Robles was in goal in a losing effort for Karlsruhe, falling 2-0 to Aachen. Edson Buddle played 73 minutes for Ingolstadt, drawing 0-0 with Energie Cottbus. 

In the Premier League, Clint Dempsey and Fulham got a big result in a matchup of London clubs, drawing 1-1 with Arsenal.  Tim Howard was in goal for Everton, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Bolton.  Brad Friedel was in goal for Spurs, beating WBA 3-1. A league down, Jonathan Spector setup Nikola Zigic’s 87th minute equalizer to get a point for Birmingham City in their 2-2 draw with Blackpool.  Robbie Findley went 78 minutes for Nottingham Forest, losing 1-0 to Cardiff City. 

Scotland, and Maurice Edu got the start for Rangers playing 70 minutes and subbing out for fellow American Alejandro Bedoya in a 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock. The only goal came in the 80th minute at Rugby Park, with both teams finishing with six shots on goal. A league down, Dominic Cervi was in goal for Greenock Morton, drawing Queen of the South 2-2. 

Oguchi Onyewu played the full ninety for Sporting, losing to Benfica 1-0 in their derby.  In Serie A, Michael Bradley and Chievo had a tough Sunday at the San Siro, losing 4-0 to Milan.  Jozy Altidore got the start and subbed out ten minutes from time in AZ’s 2-0 win over Utrecht on Friday.  Altidore exited with AZ up a goal, with AZ scoring again in the 89th minute.  AZ leads the Eredivisie by three points 13 and a game in hand.  In Belgium, Sacha Kljestan got the start for Anderlecht, beating Zulte-Waregem 3-2 at the Regenboog Stadion.

Denmark, and Michael Parkhurst and Nordsjaelland beat Silkeborg 2-1.  Chris Rolfe went the distance for AaB, losing 2-0 to Aarhus. In Norway, Mix Diskerud got the start with Stabaek losing 2-0 to Valerenga. 

Did Not Play: Marcus Hahnemann (Everton 2 – Bolton 0), Brad Guzan and Eric Lichaj (Aston Villa 0 – Swansea City 0), David Yelldell (Bayer Leverkusen 3 – Hertha Berlin 3), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt 1 – 1860 Munich 2), Jonathan Bornstein (Tigres 3 – Pachuca 0)

Injured: Stuart Holden (Bolton 0 – Everton 2), Zak Whitbread (Norwich City 2 – QPR 1), Frank Simek (Carlisle 1 – Colchester 0), Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers 0 – Kilmarnock 1), Marcus Tracy (AaB 0 – Aarhus 2), Jose Francisco Torres (Pachuca 0 – Tigres 3)
