Steve Cherundolo started for Hannover 96, losing 2-1 to Atletico Madrid on the road at the Vicente Calderon stadium. Atletico opened the scoring in the 9th minute with Mame Biram Diouf equalizing in the 38th. Atletico got a late winner in the 89th minute. Better news for Jozy Altidore and AZ who beat Valencia 2-1 at home. AZ’s Brett Holman scored the opening goal in the 45th with Valencia equalizing in the 51st. Maarten Martens scored the winner in the 79th. Altidore started and played 76 minutes. Jermaine Jones went the distance for Schalke, losing 4-2 to Bilbao at Schalke’s Veltins Arena. Bilbao opened the scoring in the 20th minute with Raul equalizing two minutes later. Raul gave Schalke the lead in the 59th minute, but Bilbao scored in the 73rd, 81st, and added a fourth goal in stoppage time.
