WCQ: Guatemala 1 – USA 1

June 12, 2012 by US Soccer Players

usa soccer

The USA remain atop their group in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying after drawing 1-1 with Guatemala in Guatemala City. Clint Dempsey opened the scoring for the United States in the 40th minute.  Guatemala’s Marco Pappa equalized in the 83rd minute from a freekick just outside the arc. Guatemala had the advantage on shots (13 to 11), shots on goal (4 to 3), and corner kicks (4 to 2). The US now leads Jamaica at the top of Group A by goal difference.

“I think the second half, there were two ways to look at it,” US National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “Guatemala had to push more and more and more and had to create something, being one-nil down, which they tried to do. The other thing is that we were going for a second goal in order to close down the game. It was just a normal way a game goes and if you allow them a set piece when they are 20 or 22 yards in front of the goal, then things like that can happen. But overall it was a good game from our end. I’m happy with the performance. I would love three points but I will take it the way it is.”
