WCQ: Jamaica 2 – USA 1

September 7, 2012 by US Soccer Players

usa soccer

Clint Dempsey scored for the United States 36 seconds into their World Cup Qualifier against Jamaica in Kingston, but it was the home side’s night.  Jamaica equalized in the 24th minute through Randolph Austin and got a 62nd minute winner from Luton Shelton.  Both of Jamaica’s goals came from free kicks. The United States will host Jamaica on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio (7pm ET – ESPN2).

“We were moving the ball well and got the ball wide and then I think it was a deflection that came to me right in front of the goal,” Dempsey said. “It was an ideal start, but it was frustrating because we struggled on set pieces. We gave away too many free kicks around the box and they punished us for it. It’s always difficult when you have these qualifiers away from home, but you’ve got to make sure you take advantage of your home games, and now we’ve got a game against them again so hopefully we can give them some payback.”
