Russia 2 – USA 2

November 14, 2012 by US Soccer Players

The US beat Antigua & Barbuda 2-1 in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying on Oct 12th.

After a strong Michael Bradley strike from the top of the arc in the 76th minute to level the score, Russia went ahead on an 84th minute penalty. That setup a shock stoppage time equalizer from Mix Diskerud who had his shot from the top of the box deflected into the goal.

With the game kicking off at 10am East Coast time at Kuban Stadium in Krasnodar, the home side went up in the 9th minute when Roman Smolov scored.  The USA looked to be on the back foot against a Russian team looking strong in UEFA World Cup Qualifying, but the lead stayed at one goal.  The US had chances in the second-half, leading up to Bradley’s well taken equalizer. A Clarence Goodson foul in the box led to Russia’s 84th minute penalty. Trailing 2-1, Diskerud subbed on in the 87th minute and scored six minutes later.

US coach Jurgen Klinsmann used all six of his substitutes and gave Molde midfielder Josh Gatt the start in his debut with the full National Team.

“We saw a very entertaining game,” Klinsmann said. “Russia proved why they are one of the best teams in Europe, and we wanted to see how good we are against such a strong team. The way our team fought back twice after being down a goal was great and it showed a lot of character. This is a young team, and a team that is growing. We are pleased with the game overall, and to score in the last minute was great.”
