Though it took a couple of months to play the second-leg, Roma will face Lazio in a Rome derby version of the Coppa Italia final after beating Inter Milan 3-2 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate. Michael Bradley started for Roma, who saw Inter cut into their opening-leg lead with a 21st minute goal. Roma responded with two goals from Mattia Destro in the 55th and 69th minutes, adding a third on the night when Vasilis Torosidis scored in the 74th. Inter pulled a goal back in the 80th minute.
“When I was appointed as coach by this club I set some goals, and among these was reaching the final, which will be played in our city in front of our fans,” Roma coach Aurelio Andreazzoli said. The fact that it’s a derby makes it even more special. We also have other objectives, but we don’t want to make everything about the Coppa Italia final, as I mentioned. If we make that mistake then we end up throwing away everything we’ve done up until now.”
The Coppa Italia final is scheduled for May 26th.
Also on Wednesday in Europe, Sacha Kljestan’s Anderlecht shutout Lokeren 3-0 in the Belgian playoffs. Milan Jovanovic opened the scoring in the 4th minute at Sontant Vanden Stock Stadium with Tom De Sutter doubling the lead in the 30th. Kljestan scored Anderlecht’s third goal in the 37th minute. Anderlecht have a four point lead at the top of the playoff table.
