USA Wins 2013 Gold Cup

July 28, 2013 by US Soccer Players

In front of a large crowd at Soldier Field in Chicago, the United States needed an advantageous assist from second-half substitute Brek Shea to win the 2013 Gold Cup title. For the second time in this tournament, a US player subbed on and scored within a minute. Shea entered the game in the 68th minute, running onto the ball 42 seconds later just before it reached the goal line for the game’s only goal.

USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann watching from a suite after being banned from the sideline and locker room following his dismissal in the semifinal, the US had difficulty with shot selection. The team finished with no shots on frame in the first-half. Stuart Holden suffered a right knee sprain in the 23rd minute, forcing a substitution that brought on Mix Diskerud.

Donovan won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and shared the Golden Boot with teammate Chris Wondolowski and Panama’s Gabriel Torres. All three had five goals. Panama’s Jaime Panedo won the Golden Glove for the tournament’s top goalkeeper. Panama also won the Fair Play award.

The United States regroups for a friendly on Aug 14 (2:30pm ET – ESPN2) against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo.
