
Premier League goal for Cameron, Johnson assists in the Bundesliga
USMNT defender Geoff Cameron and Stoke City won a meeting of USMNT players in England’s Premier League. Cameron scored in Stoke City’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa. In the Bundesliga, USMNT midfielder Fabian Johnson assisted on a goal for Hoffenheim in their win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Geoff Cameron’s Stoke City got a big Premier League win on Sunday, beating Brad Guzan’s Aston Villa 4-1 at Villa Park. Christian Benteke opened the scoring for Villa in the 5th minute. Peter Odemwingie equalized for Stoke City in the 22nd minute. Peter Crouch put Stoke up for good 4 minutes later. It was 3-1 Stoke just before halftime when Steven N’Zonzi scored. Cameron added Stoke City’s 4th goal in stoppage time.
“In my view we controlled the game from start to finish and had a real cutting edge today which has held us back in certain games this season,” Stoke City manager Mark Hughes said. “When you have that at Premier League level then you can put in good performances and I thought we were fantastic from back to front. I think we understood exactly what we needed to do and exploited the areas which we talked about before the game.”
Jozy Altidore and Sunderland were shutout 2-0 by Norwich City at Carrow Road. The referee sent off Sunderland’s Marcos Alonso in stoppage time. Tim Howard and Everton beat Swansea City 3-2. Leighton Baines opened the scoring for Everton from the penalty spot in the 20th minute. Swansea equalized in the 33rd minute. Romelo Lukaku put Everton in front in the 53rd minute with Ross Barkley doubling the lead five minutes later. Swansea pulled a goal back in stoppage time.
“I’m really pleased because we faced a difficult test and to get the all-important three points is a fantastic feeling,” Everton manager Roberto Martinez said. “At this stage of the season it’s about winning football matches and using all your experiences from during the season to get the small margins that matter.
A league down, Oguchi Onyewu and Sheffield Wednesday lost 1-0 to Doncaster. Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City lost to Reading 2-1. Birmingham City equalized from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute but Reading scored an 82nd minute winner. Tim Ream’s Bolton Wanderers came back to draw 2-2 with Yeovil Town at Huish Park Stadium. Yeovil led 2-0 by halftime with Lukas Jutkiewicz pulling a goal back in the 53rd minute. Zat Knight equalized in the 83rd minute.
Fabian Johnson assisted on Hoffenheim’s third goal in their 3-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen at BayArena. Hoffenheim opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 14th minute with Leverkusen equalizing in the 39th minute. Hoffenheim got the lead back a minute later when Kevin Volland scored. Leverkusen equalized in the 54th minute. Johnson setup Anthony Modeste’s winner in the 89th minute.
“I think it was a really, really important win after the team’s below us in the league won,” Modeste said. “We were twice as motivated after the ghost goal in the first meeting this season and gave the right response on the pitch today.”
Also in the Bundesliga, John Brooks and Hertha Berlin lost 3-0 to ‘Gladbach. In the Austrian Bundesliga, Terrence Boyd and Rapid Vienna shutout Wolfsberger 3-0. In Ligue 1, Alejandro Bedoya subbed on in the 51st minute for Nantes in their 2-1 win over Montpellier. Serge Gakpe opened the scoring for Nantes in the 3rd minute. Gapke assisted on Koffi Djidji’s goal in the 21st minute. Montpellier pulled a goal back in the 34th.
In the Eredivisie, Aron Johannsson’s AZ beat Zwolle 2-1. Johannsson had a penalty saved in the 54th minute and subbed out in the 73rd. Jermaine Jones subbed on in the 53rd minute for Besiktas in their 3-0 shutout of Akhisar Belediyespor in Turkey’s Super Lig. Veli Kavlak opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with Mustafa Pektemek doubling the lead 6 minutes later. Atiba Hutchinson scored Besiktas’s 3rd goal in the 69th minute.
Edgar Castillo started and Herculez Gomez subbed on in the 75th minute for Tijuana in their 3-1 win over DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco’s Puebla. Dario Benedetto opened the scoring for Tijuana in the 3rd minute with Fidel Martinez doubling the lead in the 67th. Maicon Santos pulled a goal back in the 84th minute. The referee sent off Puebla’s Francisco Torres in the 89th minute. Fernando Arce scored Tijuana’s 3rd goal in the 95th. The referee booked Orozco in the 22nd minute and Gomez in the 91st.
Jose Torres subbed out with an injury in the 32nd minute and Tigres lost 2-0 to Queretaro in Mexico’s La Liga. Jonathan Bornstein subbed on in the 80th minute for Atlante in their 2-1 win over Toluca. Atlante’s Roberto Gutierrez opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with Michael Arroyo making it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 54th. Toluca pulled a goal back in the 92nd minute. The referee booked Bornstein in stoppage time.
