It’s a 2014 World Cup Group G weekend on the soccer TV schedule. On Saturday, Germany plays Ghana and the USMNT meets Portugal on Sunday. Also on the TV schedule, Croatia plays Mexico on Monday as the third match day cycle of the group stage begins.
USMNT vs Portugal on Sunday at 6pm on ESPN. Both teams have squad issues, with the USMNT missing striker Jozy Altidore due to a hamstring injury and Portugal missing Pepe due to a red card in their opening game loss to Germany, Fabio Coentrao due to injury. Portugal might also be without star winger Cristiano Ronaldo, striker Hugo Almieda, and starting goalkeeper Rui Patricio. Whether or not Ronaldo plays on Sunday is now the biggest subplot of the game.
“The best version of Portugal can beat the United States,” Portugal backup goalkeeper Paulo Bento said. “We respect the USA as a very good team. They have grown up over the last years so we have to respect them but we believe in ourselves, we believe in our work, in our quality so we have to be responsible, we have to be in the best condition to win this match and we believe it.”
Germany vs Ghana on Saturday at 3pm on ESPN. After their strong showing in the Group G opener against Portugal, Germany are looking to make it an easy group stage. Ghana have everything to play for in this one, so they should try to press early and often.
“It’s like in ancient Rome,” Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng said. “There will be people around the pitch who want to see how two teams fight. The team who wants it more will win and we will fight to the death against Germany.”
