FIFA released the world rankings for June 2014 on Thursday, with the USMNT moving to 13th-place the week before the World Cup. Spain keeps the top spot in the FIFA Rankings with an 185-point lead over 2nd-place Germany. Brazil is 3rd with Portugal in 4th and Argentina rounding out the top 5. The schedule for this rankings period mainly involves World Cup warm-up friendlies.
For the USMNT, World Cup Group G has the 2nd, 4th, 13th, and 37th-place teams when the tournament kicks off next week. Ghana at 37th is the 4th-place team in CAF behind Algeria in 22nd overall, Ivory Coast at 23rd, and Egypt just ahead of Ghana in 36th. Egypt was not one of the 5 CAF countries to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
In CONCACAF, the USMNT keeps the top spot in the region with Mexico falling to 20th. Costa Rica move up 6 places to 28th with Panama up 4 to 31st. Honduras drops 3 places to 33rd after a questionable World Cup warm-up campaign.
The next release date for the FIFA World Rankings is July 17th, following the World Cup. The World Cup normally shakes up the rankings, with the prior World Cup results losing influence and World Cup games counting more than any other games. FIFA weights the importance of the match, with friendlies worth a 1.0, World Cup or Confederation qualifiers at 2.5, Confederation finals like the Gold Cup along with the Confederations Cup at 3.0, and World Cup finals at 4.0.
