MLS announced changes to the 2014 All-Star squad that will play Bayern Munich on Wednesday night in Portland (9:30pm ET – ESPN2). Due to the Los Angeles Galaxy playing on Friday, Robbie Keane and Omar Gonzalez won’t be in the All-Star squad. Seattle Sounders defender Chad Marshall is also out of the squad as he recovers from a minor car accident. MLS All-Star coach Caleb Porter added Philadelphia Union midfielder Maurice Edu and DC United players Bobby Boswell and Sean Franklin.
“Given the limited minutes that Omar and Robbie would need to play due to having a game on Friday and the injury to Chad, I felt we needed to bring in Sean, Bobby and Maurice to provide us with more cover in the back,” Porter said. “This will allow us to manage the other players’ time so everyone is ready for their matches on the weekend.”
On Saturday, Toronto FC forward Jermain Defoe withdrew from the All-Star squad due to injury. Porter replaced him with Sporting Kansas City forward Dom Dwyer.
“I am excited to play with some of the best players in Major League Soccer and in the world,” Dwyer said. “It should be a memorable week and I look forward to the events, the game and representing MLS.”
