USMNT loses to Costa Rica, U-23s advance to playoff

October 13, 2015 by US Soccer Players

The USMNT lost 1-0 to Costa Rica in an international friendly on Tuesday at Red Bull Arena. Joel Campbell scored the game’s only goal in the 70th minute. Costa Rica put five shots on goal from 15 taken to the USMNT’s three shots on goal from four taken. Keylor Navas kept the clean sheet for Costa Rica.

USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann used all six of his substitutes, using all of his available field players. That included giving Andrew Wooten his debut with the USMNT.

The USMNT returns to action on November 13, opening 2018 World Cup qualifying against St Vincent and the Grenadines at Busch Stadium in St Louis (6:30pm ET – ESPN). They play their second qualifier on November 17 at Trinidad & Tobago.

At U-23 level, the USMNT beat Canada 2-0 in the 3rd-place game. Marc Pelosi and Jerome Kiesewetter scored at Rio Tinto Stadium, with the USMNT playing Colombia in March for a spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Canada played a man down from the 44th minute. Pelosi opened the scoring in the 69th with Kiesewetter doubling the lead from the penalty spot in the 84th minute.
