Fabian Johnson had to sub out in the 16th minute of Gladbach's Europa League round of 16 second-leg against Schalke. Johnson appeared to injure his hamstring. Gladbach exited the Europa League 2-2 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate.
Andreas Christensen put Gladbach up at home in the 26th minute with Mahmoud Dahoud doubling the lead in first-half stoppage time. Schalke scored in the 54th and converted a 68th minute penalty to advance on the away goals rule.
"It’s a real blow to lead 2-0 and have one foot in the quarter-finals, but then throw it away," Gladbach's Patrick Herrmann said. "It was our game to win. We had a great first half and scored two goals – we shouldn’t be letting that lead slip. We just weren’t efficient enough in the second half and the goals we conceded are difficult to prevent. It’s obviously tiring when you play as many games as we have this season, but that cannot be an excuse."
Brad Guzan has a new coach at Middlesbrough. Head coach Aitor Karanka parted ways with the Premier League club on Wednesday. His assistant Steve Agnew becomes the interim head coach. Guzan will leave the club at the end of the season after signing with MLS and Atlanta United.
"I'd like to thank Middlesbrough for a wonderful opportunity and the players, staff, and all the people at the club who I have worked with," Karanka said. "I'd also like to thank the fans for their support. This club will always hold a special place for me and I wish everyone connected with Middlesbrough Football Club the very best for the future."
