Though it's easy to think that this already happened, CONCACAF's lengthy route to naming the 2017 Gold Cup field finally concluded on Tuesday. At a media event at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, CONCACAF officially set the groups for this summer's competition. The USMNT is the seeded team in Group B and will play Panama, Martinique, and either Haiti or Nicaragua depending on a final qualifier.
"With the groups now determined, we have a full look at the schedule of Gold Cup matches to be played this July," CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani said. "With so many compelling matches set to take place in great stadiums from coast to coast, culminating at Levi's Stadium on July 26, it's going to be an exciting summer of football for fans across the region."
The USMNT opens Group B play against Panama on July 8 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. They travel to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa for a July 12 game against Martinque. Closing out the USMNT's group schedule is a game against the Haiti/Nicaragua winner on July 15 at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. The winner of Group B advances to the knockout round on July 19 at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field against the 3rd-place team in either Group A or C. The Group B runner-up plays the Group A winner in the early game. Should the 3rd-place finisher in Group B advance, they travel to Glendale, Arizona for a July 20 game at University of Phoenix Stadium against the winner of Group C.
"The Gold Cup is an important tournament for us," USMNT coach Bruce Arena said. "We don't take any of our opponents for granted. We open with a challenging game against Panama, and Martinique has the ability to surprise teams with the quality of their players. Obviously we'll wait to see who the third team will be, but regardless we know we will need to be prepared."
Mexico is the seeded team in Group A. Filling out the group are Jamaica, El Salvador, and Curacao.
Group C has Canada, Honduras, Costa Rica, and French Guiana. French Guiana is not a member of FIFA.
