Danny Williams's Reading got the better of Tim Ream's Fulham advancing in the Championship playoffs 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate. Yann Kermorgant converted a 49th minute penalty to send Reading through. Goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi kept the clean sheet at the Madejski Stadium. Reading advances to the May 29 final at Wembley, playing the winner of the Sheffield Wednesday vs Huddersfield series that concludes on Wednesday.
In the Premier League, Lynden Gooch played the second-half in Sunderland's 2-0 loss at Arsenal. Alexis Sanchez scored in the 72nd and 81st minutes with Petr Cech recording the shutout.
"Tonight we showed a lot of character and a great deal of effort," Sunderland manager David Moyes said. "We performed in a good way which gave us a chance. We made some good chances, but we just can't seem to get that first goal in the games and tonight we had one or two opportunities to do that. As a professional in any walk of life you have to bounce back and show what you can do, and I thought the players did that tonight.”
Rubio Rubin was on the bench for Silkeborg in their 2-1 win on the night but 4-3 loss on aggregate in their Europa League playoff against Odense BK. Robert Skov put Silkeborg up at home in the 51st. Odense BK equalized in the 70th with Skov scoring again in the 72nd. Odense BK went a man down in the 90th minute.
