The soccer news starts with the midweek results for week 11 of the 2018 MLS season. Sporting KC shutout Atlanta United 2-0 on the road. Atlanta went a man down with a red card to goalkeeper Brad Guzan in the 34th minute for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Daniel Salloi scored for Sporting in the 67th with Gerso Fernandes doubling the lead in the 87th minute. Tim Melia made eight saves to keep the clean sheet in a game where Sporting only put three shots on goal.
“I think we played well," Atlanta defender Leandro Gonzalez Pirez said. "Up until the red card, I think we were deserving of winning the match then the red card changed things.I'm not going to argue that it’s a foul, but for me,I didn't think it was worthy of a red card because the ball was going out of bounds and I ran back to cover the goal. Then,obviously, in the second half, we’re playing a man down and we were able to create a lot of chances and we had some counter attacks. We were able to get forward, but I’m really proud of the way the team fought and the effort the team put in tonight.”
Columbus shutout Philadelphia 1-0 at home with Gyasi Zardes scoring in the 53rd minute. Crew goalkeeper Zach Steffen made three saves for the shutout.
The Seattle Sounders beat Toronto 2-1 at BMO Field. Will Bruin put the Sounders up in the 25th minute with Jonathan Osorio equalizing in the 40th. Bruin assisted on Handwalla Bwana's goal in the 54th minute.
Chicago shutout Montreal 1-0 at home with an 89th minute goal from Kevin Ellis. Richard Sanchez made two saves to keep the clean sheet for Chicago.
"Absolutely huge win today," Chicago coach Veljko Paunovic said. "The importance of winning the game today is it just confirms that the team is progressing. It's getting better. It was very important that we could win the three points today also because the progression we had in the last month was huge. The confidence and building good momentum, especially here at home, winning the games and playing good matches and also it's important because there is important promise in the youngsters but also our veterans needed to see that we are working towards getting better."
In the late game, LAFC shutout Minnesota United 2-0 at Banc of California Stadium. Eduard Atuesta opened the scoring for LAFC in the 31st with Mark-Anthony Kaye scoring in the 37th minute. Tyler Miller made two saves for the clean sheet. LAFC outshot Minnesota 29 to 7 putting 7 of those on goal to Minnesota's 3.

In USMNT players in Europe news, Matt Miazga's Vitesse took a big lead in their Europa League playoff semifinal series beating ADO Den Haag 5-2 away. Mason Mount had a hat-trick for Vitesse. That series concludes on Saturday.
In the Jupiler League promotion playoffs, Andrija Novakovich scored in Telstar's 3-2 home win over De Graafschap. Melvin Platje put Telstar up in the 20th minute. De Graafschap went a man down in the 44th. Nakovich doubled the lead in the 57th. The game heated up in the 72nd minute with De Graafschap scoring and then equalizing two minutes later. Mo Hamdaoui responded with a goal in the 77th to give Telstar the lead moving into Sunday's second-leg. Telstar also finished with 10-men after a red card to Tione van Huizen in the 84th minute.
