Only three games on the weekend calendar with Week 28 of the 2018 MLS season falling during the September international break. The games started with NYCFC coming back to draw 1-1 at home with DC United. Steve Birnbaum put DC up in the 58th minute with David Villa equalizing for NYCFC in the 86th.
"It’s a tough environment to play in," DC goalkeeper Bill Hamid said. "The pitch is not very good at all and the weather made it a little slick. The pitch size made it difficult to find the right spacing, and made it very difficult for both teams. They tried to play out the back too, but we ended up starting to win balls in their half of the field because you can’t play attractive soccer on this field so we made the most of it and got a point."
Sporting KC shutout Orlando City 1-0 at home. Felipe Gutierrez scored in the 53rd minute with Tim Melia making three saves to keep the clean sheet.
"It would have been nice to get the second goal," Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes said. "I thought we played very well tonight. I thought we kept the ball. I thought we didn't give all that much away - we were very good defensively and really disciplined. A lot of credit goes to the guys. That's a massive three points for us."
Portland shutout Colorado 2-0 at home. Jeremy Ebobisse scored in the 45th and Diego Valeri added a goal in the 65th. Steve Clark made three saves for the clean sheet.
“I’m gutted for the players because there was a lot that was good tonight and it is tough because I think we deserved a little bit more out of the game," Colorado coach Anthony Hudson said. "I can’t ask any more of the players, they’ve given everything and they’re trying to do things the right way, so overall I’m gutted for the players and for everyone involved.”
