US Soccer officially named Gregg Berhalter as the new coach of the USMNT on December 2, 2018. With Berhalter strongly linked with the job, the announcement wasn't a surprise. Berhalter leaves the Columbus Crew, where he took over in 2013. As a player, Berhalter had 44 appearances for the USMNT. He won the 2011 MLS Cup as a member of the LA Galaxy, taking Columbus to MLS Cup in 2015 as a coach.
"This is a tremendous honor," Berhalter said in the press release announcing his hire. "Having played for the National Team I know what it means to represent our country. I believe in our players and our program, and together we will work to build something special and develop a team that will make our supporters proud."
After spending a year under interim coach Dave Sarachan, the USMNT is focusing on games that count in 2019. The United States plays in the Gold Cup and the new Concacaf Nations League. First up is the traditional January camp.
