The soccer news starts in the Champions League with Christian Pulisic setting up the only goal in Chelsea's 1-0 win at Sergino Dest's Ajax. Pulisic subbed on in the 66th minute. Marked by Dest, Pulisic passed to Michy Batshuayi who scored the game's only goal in the 86th minute. Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made two saves to keep the clean sheet. Chelsea tops Group H on the head-to-head points tiebreaker over Ajax with both teams on six points after three games.
"Sometimes the toughest part of management is leaving out players that really want to play week-in, week-out," Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said. "You rely on them being positive and coming on to make an impact. Both Michy and Christian did that so I’m delighted for them both and delighted for the whole squad because it’s great for team spirit when subs come on and make a difference like that."
Also in the Champions League, Tyler Adams wasn't in the squad for RB Leipzig's 2-1 home win over Zenit St Petersburg in Group G. Trailing from the 25th minute, Konrad Laimer equalized for Leipzig in the 49th with Marcel Sabitzer scoring in the 59th. Timothy Weah missed Lyon's 1-1 home draw with Valencia in Group H. Valencia took the lead in the 63rd and went a man down in the 84th. Nanitamo Ikone equalized for Lille five minutes into stoppage time.
In the Championship, Eric Lichaj's Hull City beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 away. Josh Magennis scored for Hull in the 38th with Jarrod Bowen doubling the lead in the 48th. Forest pulled a goal back in the 52nd. Hull went a man down in the 68th with a red card to Josh Magennis.
Tim Ream's Fulham beat Luton Town 3-2 at home. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored in the 16th and 53rd with Luton pulling a goal back in the 60th. Mitrovic finished off his hat-trick in the 67th with Luton scoring three minutes into stoppage time. Luca de la Torre wasn't in the squad for Fulham.
Duane Holmes's Derby County beat Antonee Robinson's Wigan Athletic 1-0 at home. Graeme Shinnie scored two minutes into stoppage time. Robinson saw yellow in the 51st minute. Matthew Olosunde subbed out in the 84th minute in Rotherham United's 2-0 win at Ipswich Town in League One. Matt Crooks scored in the 11th and 48th minutes with Daniel Iversen making two saves to keep the clean sheet.
Moving to the MLS playoffs, Toronto knocked out top seed NYCFC 2-1 at Citi Field. With Jozy Altidore unavailable due to injury, Alejandro Pozuelo put Toronto up in the 47th minute. Ismael Tajouri equalized in the 69th. Pozuelo converted a 90th minute penalty to advance Toronto the Eastern Conference final.
In the Western Conference, Seattle knocked out Real Salt Lake 2-0 at home. Gustav Svensson scored in the 64th minute with Nicolas Lodeiro doubling the lead in the 81st. RSL went a man down in the 83rd with a red card to Everton Luiz for a serious foul. The game was the last for Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando who announced he would retire earlier in the season.
