The soccer news stays in the Champions League with another major statement from Red Bull Salzburg's coach Jesse Marsch. His club staged an improbable comeback at Anfield in a 4-3 loss to Liverpool. With Liverpool up three goals from the 36th minute, Red Bull's Hwang Hee-chan scored in the 39th. Takumi Minamino cut the Liverpool lead to one in the 56th with Erling Braut Haaland equalizing in the 60th. Liverpool's Mohamed Salah scored his second goal of the game in the 69th minute.
Red Bull Salzburg left without a point, but they showed that they can compete with the defending champions. In perhaps the biggest compliment to the job Marsch is doing with Salzburg, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was clear about why Red Bull's tactical adjustment worked.
"The main problem was that we tried to finish our situations off through the middle of the park," Klopp said. "They had one midfielder less in the defensive [area] because they took a bit more risk and left a #10 in between the lines. So they had one midfielder less and we still tried to push through the center. We lost the balls there, they passed the ball to the #10, he could turn at the back of Fabinho, could turn and counter-attack. That changed the momentum of the game."
For his part, Marsch sees a team that can win at this level," he said. "I think the boys are a little disappointed. "They realized that they went toe-to-toe with Liverpool here. It was an incredible performance from them. If we play like that from the start against Napoli, we have a good chance against them."
