The soccer news starts with Group H in the Champions League. Christian Pulisic scored in Chelsea's 2-2 draw at Valencia. Falling behind in the 40th minute, Mateo Kovacic equalized for Chelsea in the 41st. Pulisic put them up in the 50th on a goalmouth scramble that needed VAR. Valencia equalized in the 82nd minute. Chelsea is home to Lille on December 10 to close out group stage play.
"I’m happy to a degree," Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said. "We came here to win a match but we obviously respect the opponent, the stadium and the Champions League. It was a really tough match but the draw keeps things in our hands for the last game against Lille. There were positives and negatives from the game but that’s a big positive."
Sergino Dest's Ajax won 2-0 at Lille in the other Group G game. Hakim Ziyech scored in the 2nd with Quincy Promes doubling the lead in the 59th minute. Ajax now leads Group H with 10 points from 5 games, two ahead of Chelsea and Valencia. Ajax closes out group play at home to Valencia on December 10.
Tyler Adams missed RB Leipzig's 2-2 home draw with Benfica in Group G. Trailing from goals in the 29th and 50th minutes, Emil Forsberg converted a Leipzig penalty in the 90th and equalized six minutes into stoppage time. RB Leipzig leads Group G with 10 points to Zenit and Lyon's 7. They hold the tiebreaker over Zenit regardless of what happens on the final matchday, advancing to the knockout round with a game remaining. Leipzig finishes the group stage at Lyon on December 10.
Jesse Marsch's Red Bull Salzburg won 4-1 at Genk in Group E. Red Bull led 3-0 when Genk scored in the 85th. Red Bull is in 3rd-place on 7 points going into the final matchday at home to Liverpool on December 10. They trail leaders Liverpool by three points and 2nd-place Napoli by one point. Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Napoli means the top three have everything to play for on the final matchday. A win over Liverpool would give Red Bull the tiebreaker and a spot in the knockout round.
Eric Lichaj's Hull City shutout PNE 4-0 at home in the Championship. Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring in the 30th minute. A Josh Magennis penalty made it 2-0 in the 48th with Kamil Grosicki scoring in the 51st. Bowen scored again in the 77th minute. Geoff Cameron was on the bench for QPR's 4-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest. Down a goal from the 15th minute, QPR's LJ Wallace saw red in the 50th. Forest added goals in the 81st, 88th, and a minute into stoppage time.
