The United States National Team has appeared in 11 World Cups. In the first World Cup, the USA made it to the semifinals, its best finish in the competition. They advanced from group 4 with wins over Belgium and Paraguay, exiting the semifinals to Argentina with no 3rd-place game. In 1934, there was no group stage and the US exited to hosts Italy in the opening round. The US withdrew during qualifying for the 1938 World Cup, qualifying for the next World Cup when the tournament resumed in 1950.
The 1950 Cup is remembered for the shock 1-0 upset of England – a country that had opted against participating in any previous World Cups. The USA exited in the group stage with losses to Spain and Chile. The USA wouldn’t qualify for the next nine World Cup finals.
Returning for the first time in 40 years for Italia ’90, the US was impressive against Italy in a 1-0 loss. They exited the tournament in the group stage, also losing to Czechoslovakia and Austria. Hosting in ’94, the United States advanced to the knockout stage after finishing third in its group, tying Switzerland, beating Colombia, and losing to Romania. The US exited to eventual champions Brazil 1-0 in the round of 16. In 1998, the US lost to Germany, Iran, and Yugoslavia to exit in the group stage.
The US advanced past the group stage in 2002, beating Portugal, drawing with South Korea, and losing to Poland. They beat perennial rivals Mexico in the knockout stage before exiting in the quarterfinals to Germany.
In 2006, the United States exited in the group stage with a loss to the Czech Republic, a draw against Italy, and a loss to Ghana. In 2010, the USA advanced as group C winners in South Africa, drawing with England and Slovenia and beating Algeria. They exited to Ghana in extra time in the round of 16.
In 2014, the USMNT once again advanced to the round of 16 after beating Ghana, drawing with Portugal, and losing to Germany. The USA exited to Belgium in extra time. The United States didn’t qualify for Russia 2018. In 2022, the World Cup made a one-time move to November and December and rosters increased to 26 players. The United States advanced to the round of 16 in Qatar with group stage draws against Wales and England and a win over Iran, exiting to the Netherlands.
