World Cup Qualifying: USMNT 2 – Mexico 0

With a path to advancing to the 2014 World Cup, the United States did what they needed to do in a 2-0 shutout of Mexico at Crew Stadium in Columbus. With the USA regrouping after three yellow card suspensions and the loss of Michael Bradley to injury just before the start of their last World Cup Qualifier, Eddie Johnson opened the scoring in the 49th minute. Johnson headed in a Landon Donovan set piece. Johnson exited in the 75th for Mix Diskerud, who setup Donovan for a goal three minutes later. Clint Dempsey missed a stoppage time penalty.

“They’re experienced players, they’ve played these games before and they know what these games are about,” US coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “I told them over the last couple days that I expect their leadership. I expect them to carry us through difficult moments, whatever happens.”
