Matt Freese emerged as the starter for the USMNT at the 2025 Gold Cup, quickly showing his skills as a shot stopper and organizing a defense over his initial appearances for the national team. The goalkeeper got his professional start with the Philadelphia Union, moving to NYCFC in 2023 and taking the starting job. He won the club’s MVP award in 2024. By 2025, Freese was in the picture for the USMNT.

Part of January camp, Freese saw his first minutes for the USMNT against Turkey on Jun 7. He started all three Gold Cup group D games: against Trinidad and Tobago on Jun 16, Saudi Arabia on Jun 20, and Haiti on Jun 23. Started against Costa Rica in the quarterfinals on Jun 29.
