Chile 3 – USMNT 2

January 28, 2015 by US Soccer Players

The USMNT started their 2015 schedule with a 3-2 road loss to Chile at Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua. As expected, USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann opted to play three defenders, including capping DC United defender Steve Brinbaum.

Brek Shea put the USMNT up early with a 6th minute goal. Matt Besler played a ball into the box for Shea to run onto, beating Chile goalkeeper Johnny Herrera. It didn’t take long for Chile to respond. Roberto Gutierrez headed in their equalizer in the 10th minute. Jozy Altidore capitalized on a Mix Diskerud pass to put the USMNT in front in the 31st minute. Gutierrez thought he had another Chile equalizer,  but was called offside in the 45th.

Klinsmann brought on Lee Nguyen for Bobby Wood at halftime, eventually making four substitutions as the USMNT reverted to their regular 4-4-2. Michael Bradley hit the post in the 61st minute. Chile equalized five minutes later through Mark Gonzalez. It was Gonzalez again in the 75th, scoring the winning goal for Chile.

The USMNT returns to StubHub Center for another round of training. They close out the January camp with a friendly against Panama on February 8.
