Gold Cup: USMNT 2 – El Salvador 0

The USMNT and El Salvador met in the Gold Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday at Lincoln Financial Field. Considering the stakes, the game developed as expected. The USMNT needed goalkeeper Tim Howard to come up big early on, stopping an El Salvador breakaway after a defensive slip. Both teams had chances, but it was the USMNT capitalizing. Omar Gonzalez headed in a Michael Bradley free kick to start the scoring in the 41st minute. Eric Lichaj doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time with Clint Dempsey assisting. Howard picked up the shutout.

El Salvador started the second-half with sustained pressure resulting in several close chances. The USMNT pushed for a third goal, also seeing opportunities.

An own-goal was the difference in the other quarterfinal with Costa Rica advancing 1-0 over Panama. The game’s only goal came in the 77th minute with Costa Rica goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton making three saves for the clean sheet. Costa Rica vs USMNT is set for Saturday at 10pm ET at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. FS1 will have the coverage.
