Germany 1 – USMNT 2

June 10, 2015 by US Soccer Players

The USMNT picked up another win in Europe on Wednesday, this time against the reigning world champions. It took a comeback, another game winner from Bobby Wood, and a stoppage time save from Brad Guzan to beat Germany 2-1 in Cologne.

Germany’s Mario Gotze opened the scoring at Rhein Energie Stadion in the 12th minute. Germany had control of possession in the early going, pressuring the USMNT who had issues with their defensive shape. Mix Diskerud equalized in the 41st minute, changing the tempo of the game shortly before halftime. The second-half was better for the USMNT, producing chances and absorbing pressure while both teams made changes.

USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann used all six of his available substitutes by the 74th minute, bringing on Alfredo Morales, Jordan Morris, and Bobby Wood in his final move to the bench. Once again, it was wood making the difference for the USMNT, scoring the game winner in the 87th minute.

The USMNT has another friendly on the schedule before the start of the 2015 Gold Cup. They host Guatemala at LP Field in Nashville on July 3. The group stage of the Gold Cup begins for the USMNT four days later against Honduras in Frisco, Texas.
