Mexico ended their World Cup qualifying losing streak in Columbus, beating the USMNT 2-1 on a late goal to open the Hexagonal round. Miguel Layun put Mexico up in the 20th minute scoring with a deflection. Bobby Wood equalized in the 49th. Rafa Marquez scored Mexico’s winner in the 89th minute, heading in a corner kick from Layun. Mexico finished a man down with a stoppage time red card to Carlos Salcedo. The USMNT had to make a goalkeeper substitution in the 40th minute with Brad Guzan coming on in place of Tim Howard. USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced that Howard strained a muscle and won’t be available for the next game.

The USMNT plays Costa Rica away on Tuesday (9pm ET – beIN Sport). Costa Rica shutout Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain. Cristian Bolanos opened the scoring in the 65th and assisted on Ronald Matarrita’s goal in stoppage time.

Also in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, Panama beat Honduras 1-0 away. Fidal Escobar scored the game’s only goal in the 22nd minute.
