Gold Cup: USMNT 1 – Haiti 0

July 10, 2015 by US Soccer Players

The USMNT got the goal they needed early in the second-half at Gillette Stadium on Friday to shutout Haiti 1-0 in Group A. The win means the USMNT advances to the knockout round of the 2015 Gold Cup as Group A winners. Clint Dempsey scored the game’s only goal in the 47th minute with an assist from second-half substitute Gyasi Zardes.

USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann opted for a different back line against Haiti as he made changes across his lineup. That included partnering Aron Johannsson with Jozy Altidore. Johannsson almost had the USMNT up a goal in the 34th minute but the referee called him offside. Replays showed Johannsson wasn’t offside.

JK: I need to give a huge compliment to Haiti for the way they played. Every #USMNT player knows how tricky these games are.

Haiti had their moments, hitting the bar from a free kick in the 10th minute. USMNT goalkeeper Brad Guzan needed several saves to keep the clean sheet. The USMNT finishes their Group A schedule on Monday against Panama at Sporting Park in Kansas City (8:30pm ET – Fox Sports 1).

In the early game, Honduras and Panama drew 1-1. Luis Tejada scored for Panama in the 21st minute with Andy Najar equalizing for Honduras in the 81st. The draw meant the USMNT could win the group by beating Haiti. The USMNT advances with a game left and will meet the 3rd-place winner of Group B or C in the quarterfinals in Baltimore on July 18.
