USMNT 1 – Panama 1, Panama wins 3-2 on penalties

July 25, 2015 by US Soccer Players

The 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup 3rd-place game needed extra time and penalties on Saturday to determine a winner. The two teams finished regulation tied 1-1 at PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. After a scoreless extra time, Panama won the game 3-2 on penalties.

With Panama creating chances throughout the first-half, USMNT defender Tim Ream cleared the ball off of the line in the 37th minute. Panama finally opened the scoring through Roberto Nurse in the 55th minute. USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann brought on DeAndre Yedlin and Clint Dempsey midway through the second-half, and it was the substitutes coming up with the equalizer. Yedlin found Dempsey in the 70th minute for the goal.

Klinsmann used his final substitute at the beginning of extra time, bringing on DaMarcus Beasley.

With the 3rd-place game going to penalties, Aron Johannsson and Clint Dempsey converted their attempts. Fabian Johnson missed on the USMNT’s third penalty, but Brad Guzan saved Panama’s attempt to keep the penalties at 2-2. In the fourth round, Michael Bradley’s shot was saved and Panama took the lead 3-2. DaMarcus Beasley’s shot was saved in the Fifth Round with Panama winning the 3rd-place game.

Also on Saturday, the USMNT learned that it will play in Group C in the Fourth Round of CONCACAF 2018 World Cup qualifiers starting in November. Trinidad & Tobago was also drawn into the USMNT’s group with those two teams awaiting the winners of St Vincent and the Grenadines vs Aruba and Antigua and Barbuda vs Guatemala in the Third Round of qualifying. Those home-and-home series are set for Aug 31 – Sept 8.
