USMNT 4 – Guatemala 0

July 3, 2015 by US Soccer Players

The USMNT took the lead against Guatemala in Nashville on Friday night from a 20th minute own goal. DeAndre Yedlin sent the ball across the six-yard box only for Guatemala defender Carlos Castrillo to head it in. The sequence occurred just two minutes after Guatemala goalkeeper Paulo Motta blocked a Jozy Altidore penalty. Timmy Chandler doubled the USMNT’s lead in the 58th on a shot from outside the box. Clint Dempsey made it 3-0 USMNT by converting a 72nd minute penalty. Chris Wondolowski finished off a fine setup from Gyasi Zardes with an 86th minute goal. Brad Guzan needed three saves for the clean sheet.

USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann had few surprises in his starting lineup for the USMNT’s warm-up friendly prior to the start of the 2015 Gold Cup. Klinsmann returned to his favored attacking partnership of Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore with both players available after family commitments and injury kept them out for June’s trip to Europe.

#USAvGUA: Tonight marks the 50th time Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey will appear in the same match for the #USMNT.

Where Klinsmann did experiment was with his defenders, using yet another mix of players in front of Brad Guzan. As promised, Klinsmann made use of his substitutes swapping out two of his defenders at halftime. Fabian Johnson exited for Greg Garza and Ventura Alvarado subbed on for Omar Gonzalez. Klinsmann subbed out center back John Brooks for Tim Ream in the 62nd minute.

The USMNT returns to action in their Group A opener at the 2015 Gold Cup on July 7 against Honduras at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas (7:30pm ET – Fox Sports 1).
