USMNT 6 – Cuba 0

July 18, 2015 by US Soccer Players

On a hot evening at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, the USMNT had no issues advancing to the 2015 Gold Cup semifinals. The USMNT knocked out Cuba at the quarterfinal stage with a 6-0 shutout.

Clint Dempsey scored three goals, starting with the opener only four minutes into the game. Gyasi Zardes doubled that USMNT lead in the 14th. Aron Johannsson made it 3-0 USMNT in the 31st, scoring from the top of the box. Omar Gonzalez added the fourth goal in first-half stoppage time. Dempsey converted a penalty in the 64th and scored from the run of play in the 77th minute.

For all of the goals, the USMNT had frustrating segments where they couldn’t take full advantage of their opportunities. The USMNT controlled possession for long stretches, getting multiple looks at Disovelis Guerra’s goal.

USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann used two of his substitutes at halftime, bringing on Joe Corona and Brad Evans. He used his third substitute in the 67th minute to bring on DeAndre Yedlin for Fabian Johnson.

The USMNT moves on to play Jamaica in the semifinals at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on July 22. Jamaica knocked out Haiti 1-0 with Giles Barnes scoring in the 7h minute. Ryan Thompson made four saves to keep the clean sheet.
