Nations League: Canada 2 – USMNT 0

October 15, 2019 by US Soccer Players

Canada took the lead in Nations League A, group A with a 1-0 shutout of the USMNT at BMO Field. Needing to make an injury substitution for Mark-Anthony Kaye just 7 minutes in, Canada regrouped and forced the offense in both halves. Alphonso Davies scored the game’s only goal in the 63rd minute. Lucas Cavallini doubled the lead a minute into stoppage time. Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan kept the clean sheet with three saves.

“There were too many 50/50 balls that went on their end,” USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter told ESPN2. “It was the will that got them winning those balls and I’m disappointed in that. We’re disappointed. We go home and we still have the chance to win the group and that’s our objective.”

Berhalter subbed out Christian Pulisic for Paul Arriola in the 60th minute. He then made a double substitution in the 74th minute with Gyasi Zardes coming on for Christian Roldan and Nick Lima for DeAndre Yedlin. The USMNT finished with 7 shots on goal to Canada’s 9 with 3 on goal to their 5.

The Nations League continues during the November window with the USMNT at home to Canada on the 15 in Orlando and at Cuba in the Cayman Islands on the 19. Canada leads the group with 9 points from three games. The USMNT is in 2nd-place with 3 points from two games.
