USMNT 0 – Mexico 3

September 6, 2019 by US Soccer Players

The USMNT vs Mexico rivalry resumed on Friday at MetLife Stadium with Mexico recording a 3-0 win. Mexico benefited from the return of their first choice attacking players with Chicharito Hernandez opening the scoring in the 21st minute. Erick Gutierrez doubled the lead in the 78th minute with Uriel Antuna making it 3-0 in the 82nd. Josh Sargent had an 88th minute penalty saved by Mexico goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco.

“I think it’s a game in which we need to be smarter with some of the plays that we make,” US midfielder Wil Trapp told FS1.… “They’re a team that presses well. I think at times we were a little naive in how we were playing out. We just have to be brave and continue to play.”

The USMNT returns to action on Tuesday at Busch Stadium in St Louis against 5th-ranked Uruguay (8pm ET – FS1).

Prior to the start of the game, the US Soccer Federation honored goalkeeper Tim Howard who is retiring at the end of the 2019 MLS season. Howard had 121 appearances for the USMNT, the first honoree under a new USSF policy that will recognize retiring players with at least 100 caps.
